Professionalism – dilemmas and lapses

At our annual conference, Professionalism - dilemmas and lapses, in March 2009, we considered one of the greatest challenges faced by those who deal with concerns about professional practice – how to move upstream and identify lapses earlier and deal with them effectively.

NCAS have published a new guide to tackle this issue with contributions from:

  • Baroness Young, Chairman of the Care Quality Commission
  • Professor Sir Graeme Catto, Chair of the General Medical Council
  • Dr Deborah Bowman, Senior Lecturer in Medical Ethics and Law at St George's, University of London
  • Peter Walsh, Chief Executive of Action against Medical Accidents.

Professionalism – dilemmas and lapses identifies principles to guide individual professionals and those responsible for managing professionalism in practice. We hope that this guide will provoke discussion within healthcare organisations about how professionalism is promoted in practice, and will prove useful to those considering how lapses are identified and managed. The case study material, all of which is fictitious, may provide the basis for postgraduate education meetings and seminars.
